Mega Project: A Journey from Exploration to First Oil in Whale

Panel
The Whale field development is Shell’s ambitious mega project in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Drilling for development wells commenced in 2022, across five drill centers, with the goal of achieving first oil in 2024. The Whale Team leveraged lessons learned from exploration and appraisal wells, as well as insights from previous development projects like Appomattox and Vito. This project integrates innovative practices in project delivery, field development, and well construction. The team emphasizes continuous improvement, best-in-class asset management, and a strong focus on people and stakeholder management. These elements are crucial for ensuring a successful first oil and the long-term development of the field. The journey is ongoing, and this marks the beginning of our Whale tale.
